Gnomes

Gnomes are hard to define. As a people they tend to enjoy their own company, but they are not isolationists nor xenophobic. They spurn the teachings of colleges and books preferring to learn through doing (leading to many Gnomes literally trying to re-invent the wheel) yet they are more than happy to pen these same books and accept positions teaching the same colleges they turned their large noses up to years before. For all that though they have a love of all things intellectual, though mostly focused on the concrete rather than the ephemeral. It was their delving into the nature of alchemy that has lead to the reintroduction of curative potions and restorative pills. Their clockwork devices, though small, seem to be on par with what even the greatest wizards achieve through magic. The greatest mystery of the Gnomes though is simply how did the survive the Calamity? The oldest texts we have speak of Gnomes as lost race that existed before the Calamity, yet they only reappeared within the last two hundred years. Where have the been this entire time? How did they survive the breaking of the world? If you ask them they will simply shrug and keep working on their tasks if you’re lucky. If you’re luck is a bit more questionable they will decide to explain to you exactly how they (think) they survived. Should this happened feel free to interrupt them with an apology and exit. They will find it rather rude that you would ask then leave, but the alternative is a 36 hour discourse on one Gnomes beliefs. They will expect you to pass a test afterwards as well.
